A driver who ran over a Diwali reveller in a Wolverhampton park, then reversed back over him, has been convicted of murder.

Jashan Singh, 21, of Cannock Road, Wolverhampton, was found guilty at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

He drove into Navpreet Singh, 26, at Phoenix Park, reversed back over him and sped off in the early hours of 22 October last year.

Jashan Singh was also convicted of perverting the course of justice and will be sentenced on 30 November.

"Navpreet was a married man with a pregnant wife and not someone who was going out looking for trouble," said Detective Sergeant Rob Moir, of the homicide unit.

Navpreet had gone with friends to Phoenix Park, off Dudley Road, to celebrate the final day of Diwali, as had a group including Jashan Singh.

At around 1am, a dispute broke out between the groups and one of Navpreet's friends was attacked, with Prabhjot Singh, an associate of Jashan Singh, leading the violence.

When Navpreet went to help, Prabhjot Singh hit him with an iron rod.

Prabhjot Singh, 18, of St Luke's Garden, Wolverhampton, pleaded guilty to violent disorder after hitting Navpreet Singh with an iron rod during the attack.

"Sadly, there was violence that evening with Mohit Singh, Prabhjot Singh and Jashan Singh the aggressors," DS Moir said.

Navpreet got up and kicked a headlight on Jashan Singh's Mercedes; Jashan Singh drove over him, reversed back over him and fled.

"Navpreet and his friends were attacked and, tragically, he was not only driven at but then reversed over leaving him with fatal injuries," DS Moir said.

His friends took him to hospital, where he died.

Jashan Singh drove to an industrial estate in Willenhall, where he and Mohit Singh swapped clothes so their descriptions would not match witness accounts.

Mohit Singh, 18, of Tangmere Road, Wolverhampton, was found guilty of perverting the course of justice after swapping clothes with Jashan Singh following the killing.

"He then drove off and made efforts to avoid being identified and captured," DS Moir said.

He got home at about 3.25am, switched vehicles, and was later traced by phone near airports in Coventry, Heathrow and Stansted.

He was arrested in Bicester on the morning of 24 October.

His story changed three times: he first told police he drove off while Navpreet was still standing, then, confronted with DNA evidence, claimed he was only a passenger.

At trial, he admitted driving but said he reversed over Navpreet by accident.

"Jashan Singh knew exactly what he was doing and was intent on causing serious harm," DS Moir said.

Prabhjot Singh, 18, of St Luke's Garden, Wolverhampton, pleaded guilty to violent disorder before the trial.

An 18-year-old from Tangmere Road, Wolverhampton, Mohit Singh, was arrested at Birmingham Airport in January and found guilty of perverting the course of justice; both will be sentenced alongside Jashan Singh.

"Through our enquiries - which included speaking to witnesses, reviewing CCTV and analysing phone records - we were able to establish what happened and the movements afterwards," DS Moir said.
