A thief lifted a suitcase stuffed with £30,000 worth of valuables from a train travelling out of London King's Cross, stepping off at Peterborough railway station with the case at around 9pm on 8 July.
British Transport Police has released CCTV images of a man wanted in connection with a string of high-value luggage thefts on services running in and out of London, with links to Cambridgeshire.
The victim had stowed her suitcase in the designated luggage rack on board the service after it departed King's Cross.
When the train pulled into Peterborough, a man removed the case from the rack and alighted with it.
The woman only realised her suitcase was gone when she arrived at her own stop further down the line, at which point she reported the theft.
The Peterborough incident is one of the most recent in a series of linked high-value luggage thefts under investigation, with the offences being treated as connected.
Police Constable Chris Pepper said: "Luggage theft can be very upsetting and distressing for victims."
He noted that suitcases hold more than just expensive belongings.
"Suitcases contain not only items of significant financial value, but in some instances, hugely sentimental value," PC Pepper said.
Explaining why the images were made public, the officer said investigators are "keen to identify and speak to the man in the images as he may have vital information that could assist our ongoing investigation."
PC Pepper stressed the scale of the inquiry into the connected thefts.
"Our enquiries into these linked offences have been extensive and we're determined to leave no stone unturned to secure justice for victims," he said.
The officer urged members of the public to come forward if they know the man pictured in the CCTV images.
"We're now appealing to the public to assist our investigation — if you recognise this man, text his name to 61016 quoting reference 838 of 8 July," PC Pepper said.
Those who wish to stay anonymous have another route to pass on tips.
"Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111," he added.
