£20m RAF jet that exploded yards from an Anglesey caravan park was flying without its fuel cap, investigators find
Ground crew were responsible for the missing cap, and one insider called it 'a pretty poor indicator of standards'. The Hawk T2 was on a test flight after repairs when it caught fire taking off from RAF Valley on September 23. A seasoned pilot alongside a trainee guided it away from buildings before both ejected with minor injuries.
Another insider asked: 'If a fuel cap can be left off, what else can be?'
Some sources suspect a 'major engine failure' may instead be to blame.
The jet corkscrewed into farmland by Afallon Caravan Park in Llanfaelog after 20 seconds airborne.
