A 19-year-old student attacked pupils and staff with a blade at Vocational School Complex No. 4 in Ostroleka, a city north of Warsaw, at around 9am local time on Wednesday. Eight people were taken to hospital — five of them children — with two suffering serious injuries. The attacker fled the scene and was detained by police near the city's municipal beach shortly afterwards.

Mayor Pawel Niewiadomski said the situation is 'under control' and called on parents and staff to stay calm.

Fire brigade spokesman Adrian Stupski confirmed all eight injured were conscious when taken to hospital.

Authorities have closed the school to secure the site and establish the full circumstances of the attack.
