'A meeting is not a result': Family of East Sussex couple jailed in Iran demand action from Ed Miliband

The East Sussex couple Lindsay and Craig Foreman have spent 664 days in a Tehran prison since being convicted in February on espionage charges that both deny. Their family met Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband on Tuesday — the first such meeting since he took office — to push for the detention to be formally recognised as arbitrary and for legal proceedings to be brought against Iran. Lindsay's son Joe Bennett said he left feeling 'encouraged' but warned that options being discussed fall short of actual results. Folkestone MP Tony Vaughan and Middle East Minister Stephen Doughty also attended.
The Foremans were detained in January 2025 during a round-the-world motorcycle journey through Iran.
Both went on hunger strike earlier this year — for 93 and 84 days respectively — after prison authorities cut off family phone calls.
The family is calling for diplomatic protection and for Iran's government to formally acknowledge the detention as arbitrary.
