A Range Rover ploughs into Howden's medieval market cross and leaves the Grade II listed landmark in pieces

Councillor David Howard says locals are 'trying to work out who owns it' after Thursday's crash outside the Shire Hall at about 10.38am. One pedestrian was reportedly taken to hospital, though Humberside Police say nobody was seriously hurt. The base dates back to medieval times, while the upper shaft and cross were cut in 1909. Howard says the cross 'needs to be put back in some form'.

The 4x4 was left perched on the wrecked base, with chunks of stone across the square.

Hairdresser Brodie Tomlinson heard 'quite a loud bang and a scream' before rushing out to help.

Howard said the scene looked like 'an album cover from an early 1980s rock band'.
