About 150,000 rally in Belgrade as Serbia's student movement bids to oust Vucic's party in Sunday's election

Crowds chanting "victory" packed Slavija Square on Thursday while Aleksandar Vucic held a counter-rally at a sports hall elsewhere in the city. The leaderless Student List has fielded a full slate of 250 candidates for the 250-seat parliament, drawn largely from academia and people with no prior political experience. Civil society groups have documented intimidation, arrests and the misuse of public resources during the campaign. Vucic's Serbian Progressive Party has governed for more than 14 years.

The movement grew out of the 2024 collapse of the Novi Sad station canopy, which killed 16 people.

Having left the presidency, Vucic is now seeking a return to power as prime minister.

'For the first time in my life, I believe that it is possible,' said Marija Nedeljkovic Radic, 47.
