Corvex Asset Management, holding more than six per cent of Whitbread, has called for a board seat at the Premier Inn owner, accusing the FTSE 100 hospitality giant of "underperformance" and a "continued commitment to the status quo." Managing partner Keith Meister wrote to Whitbread citing "growing concern" with its strategic direction and capital allocation, saying the firm's "limited willingness to meaningfully engage" left Corvex with "little choice" but to go public. The activist investor had originally pushed for an outright sale of the company before pivoting to a demand for a "rigorous, fact-based review." The intervention comes as Whitbread already faces pressure following announcements of thousands of job cuts and a full restaurant sell-off to absorb rising taxes and Iran war costs.
Corvex is pushing for Whitbread to hand a board seat to James Gemmel, a 15-year partner at the fund, citing his turnaround work at Kindred Group and MDU Resources.
