Activist is charged over car attack costing Australian MP a leg as his family reveal she is their 20-year friend
Brendan Nugent, 43, will appear at Wangaratta Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, accused of intentionally causing serious injury to independent MP Helen Haines, 65. Police allege the attack was targeted. The driver reportedly did a U-turn, struck her outside her office, then reversed and hit her again. She is critical at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, where surgeons are fighting to save her other leg.
Father Rod Nugent called it a 'shocking and horrific crime' against a 'much loved' friend.
Barber Ricky Jefferies pulled the suspect from the Land Cruiser and took a knife from him.
Anthony Albanese and Tony Burke pulled out of a $2,500-a-head Labor fundraiser after the attack.
