Adam Rickitt, 48, who once earned £5,000 for a single 30-minute club appearance, paid himself just £12,000 last year from the Knutsford craft bar he runs with wife Katy. The former Nick Tilsley actor's father borrowed £5.5m from him over the years but died with nothing, leaving Adam determined to manage money differently.

Rickitt gave up a Cambridge place to audition for Coronation Street at 18, landing the role on his very first acting attempt.

At his peak he earned £3,500 per episode on Corrie and released a six-album record deal, with debut single 'I Breathe Again' reaching number five in the UK charts.

He and Katy are in 'a period of reinvestment' in their bar business, Dexter and Jones, taking dividends of just £36,000 to stay within the basic tax band.
