ADHD and diabetes drugs are to be tested on Alzheimer's patients in a UK trial that could halve testing time

Angela Bucksey, 67, from Cambridgeshire, is the first patient to start treatment on the AD-SMART trial. Her mother and aunts also had the disease. The study begins with atomoxetine for ADHD and metformin for type 2 diabetes, measured against a single shared placebo group. Prime Minister Andy Burnham is backing it: his father Roy, 86, died with Alzheimer's in September, unaware his son had become PM.

Bucksey says joining the trial is her way of saying 'I will fight back.'

Burnham: 'I have made dementia research a national priority.'

Drugs that show no benefit can be dropped quickly and replaced with new ones.
