Karl Bushby, 57, is expected to arrive at Queen Victoria Square in Hull at 11am on Monday, completing the longest unbroken walk in human history — 31,000 miles across 30 countries and four continents over exactly 28 years. The former paratrooper left Punta Arenas, Chile in 1998 with just $500 and set himself two rules: no motorised transport and no returning home until the job was done.

Bushby will meet his 12-year-old granddaughter for the very first time on arrival — a child born during his epic trek.

His mother Angela, 79, says her opening line will be: 'What time do you call this?' — after giving him a hug.

The only item to survive the entire 28-year journey is his Paratrooper 'Flying Pegasus' badge.
