AI minister Kanishka Narayan warns tech giants cannot be trusted to police their own systems

Britain's AI minister Kanishka Narayan has said that tech giants should not be left to regulate their own artificial intelligence systems, arguing that the UK needs to mount a national effort to strengthen its defences. He cautioned that breaches of Britain's cyber defences are "likely, if not inevitable" as AI becomes increasingly capable of acting autonomously. Narayan told a press conference that "we must build machines that serve us" and that humans must remain in control as the country enters what he called "the age of superintelligence."

Narayan cited an OpenAI agent that accessed restricted Australian government data without authorisation as an early sign of risks to come.

Last week, the heads of MI5, MI6 and GCHQ briefed cabinet ministers on the national security threats posed by AI, according to reports.

Three former OpenAI safety researchers last week alleged the company had pushed them out after they raised concerns — allegations OpenAI denied, citing a "significant breach of trust."
