AI minister warns Britain must not leave AI to 'tech bros and oligarchs' and hints at new Budget measures

Kanishka Narayan admitted Britain is 'currently totally reliant on other countries for essential bits of technology'. Prime Minister Andy Burnham appointed him the UK's first cabinet minister for AI in July. He said talks with Defence Secretary John Healey could produce an AI announcement in Wednesday's Budget, but gave no details. Ministers are also weighing mandatory reporting of serious incidents involving autonomous AI.

Narayan said the AI upheaval 'in some ways exceeds the Industrial Revolution'.

The government spent just £13,000 on AI that uncovered 500 hidden public-sector cyber flaws.
