Retired four-star general David Petraeus has warned that autonomous AI staff officers — able to collect intelligence and reach battlefield conclusions with minimal human oversight — will be a reality within four years. Petraeus, former head of the CIA and US Central Command, told the Forecast2050 podcast the shift would be "truly revolutionary." He described the coming systems as "generic AI staff officers who will never sleep, never eat, never take a break." The remarks come as debate widens over whether AI should ever be entrusted with life-or-death military decisions.
Petraeus said AI agents will soon operate in platoon or battalion-sized units, sharing information and coordinating autonomously.
