Hosts will no longer be allowed to bury additional rules in messages or on in-property notices. Every house rule must appear in a single dedicated section of the listing before any booking takes place. Guests may still be asked to leave dirty dishes in the sink, gather used towels and sort recycling. Some exceptions apply — for instance, hosts in bear country can require guests to use animal-proof bins.

Airbnb admitted house rules had become 'confusing, onerous and hard to manage'.

Georgia hosts Cassie and Jon imposed a $50 penalty for every 10 minutes guests checked out late.

The same couple charged an $800 fee for anyone who smoked within 20 feet of the property.
