Alan Bennett's 'The History Boys' will return to the West End next April with Nicholas Hytner directing again

Nicholas Hytner, who is directing the revival, used the announcement to raise the alarm about what he called an 'almost terminal decline' in the teaching of humanities at state schools. History and modern languages have been 'downgraded', he argued — a mistake for pupils and the wider economy alike. The production opens at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on 10 April 2027 and runs for 16 weeks before closing on 24 July. Original designer Bob Crowley returns to the production.

The 2004 premiere made household names of James Corden, Russell Tovey and Dominic Cooper.

Bennett has described it as among his happiest works, written in far less than the five years he usually requires.

The new cast will be announced in January 2027.
