Republican senator Lisa Murkowski says Trump's Justice Department 'should never have filed' its bid to block Alaska's Senate result
President Donald Trump has said he ordered the case himself, telling reporters: 'I'm the one that said do it.' The suit seeks to halt certification if Senator Dan S. Sullivan loses. It blames a near-namesake on the ballot, retired teacher Daniel J. Sullivan. Democrat Mary Peltola branded it 'a desperate attempt to silence Alaskans', and her campaign has asked a federal judge to let it join the case.
Democrats call the lawsuit an 'unprecedented pre-emptive strike on democratic elections'.
Veteran Republican election lawyer Ben Ginsberg said: 'They are scraping the bottom of the barrel.'
The Alaska Supreme Court had already upheld Daniel J. Sullivan's place on the ballot in June.
