Prime Minister Edi Rama has refused to step down as violence entered its third straight day in Tirana, with security forces turning tear gas and water cannons on protesters who pelted the Education Ministry with rocks. Wednesday's unrest left 89 people injured, including 61 police officers, after demonstrators attacked government buildings, banks and businesses. Parliament halted its session as high school students joined thousands of marchers flooding the capital with chants of 'Rama Resign!'

The unrest is partly rooted in prolonged opposition to a Kushner-linked luxury resort development on Albania's southern coast, which protesters see as a symbol of corruption and inequality.

Rama argued that it is democratic elections, not street pressure, that determine who holds power: 'We had elections last year, not a revolution.'

The EU delegation in Tirana has called for a 'proportionate response' from authorities, warning of concern at the violent escalation.
