Alberta Premier urges Canadians to 'remain in Canada' hours before separation referendum as Carney warns US wants to 'own' the country

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has come out against separation just hours before Monday's referendum, urging Albertans to stay in Canada while seeking greater autonomy. Prime Minister Mark Carney warned a 5,000-strong rally in Calgary that outside forces — a clear reference to Trump and his 51st-state threats — are working to 'break' Canada so they can 'own us'. The two leaders, normally at odds, have united publicly against the separatist path as the vote looms.

The referendum will not decide independence directly — Albertans will vote on whether to begin a legal process toward a future separation vote.
