Alberta voters overwhelmingly reject a move towards independence from Canada, early results show, as Trump's annexation threats loom
Results showed roughly 76% in favour of remaining in Canada and 23% supporting a path to separation, based on more than one million votes counted. CBC, Canada's national broadcaster, called the result early on Tuesday when roughly one-third of the vote had been processed. Prime Minister Mark Carney, who had campaigned for Albertans to turn down separation, said he welcomed the numbers. The ballot question asked voters whether a further referendum on breaking away should be held.
The projected outcome delivers a significant win for Carney and the pro-unity camp.
The referendum on the future of oil-rich Alberta left neither side of the argument fully satisfied.
