Alberta votes by 76 per cent to stay in Canada, rejecting a separation referendum, while separatists vow to fight on

Prime Minister Mark Carney celebrated what he called 'a clear choice', saying 'Albertans chose Canada' as the results came in against the backdrop of President Donald Trump's tariff offensive and threats to absorb Canada. The tally surpassed 1.5 million ballots, with roughly 24 per cent of voters having backed launching a formal legal process toward separation. Calgary lawyer Jeffrey Rath, a leading separatist figure, declared 'our movement isn't stopping'. Premier Danielle Smith, who triggered the vote following a citizen petition, is due to speak to Albertans on Tuesday.

Separatist Keith Wilson said 'at least a quarter of Albertans' want better treatment.

Wainwright voter Dustin Degenhardt said Ottawa treats Alberta 'as, you know, a colony'.

More than 100 polling stations had to extend voting hours after late openings.
