Aldi and Lidl will be banned from blocking rival supermarkets opening nearby under tougher competition watchdog rules

Morrisons, Waitrose and Iceland all wrote to the Competition and Markets Authority urging it to rein in the German discounters. Iceland claimed the pair had used 'problematic land arrangements at scale'. Both chains dodged the 2010 rules because they were classed as 'limited assortment discounters'. Aldi now runs more than 1,050 UK stores, up from 470 in 2012, while Lidl has over 1,000.

Rivals and landowners can now ask the watchdog to review existing Aldi and Lidl deals.

The CMA's Juliette Enser said the change would 'level the playing field' for shoppers.

Aldi and Lidl insist their store expansion plans will carry on regardless.
