New Which? research comparing prices on 93 everyday items across Britain's major supermarkets in September found that where shoppers choose to buy their groceries can make a difference of more than £60. Aldi came out cheapest at £159.48, against Waitrose's £223.38 for an identical shop. Lidl ran Aldi close, finishing just under £2 behind, with Lidl Plus app members charged £161.48. The results coincide with Lidl separately reporting £13 billion in annual revenue — a 10.8 per cent rise — alongside 43 million additional customer visits over the past year.
Tesco Clubcard members paid £187.71 and Sainsbury's Nectar card holders £188.95 — but non-loyalty shoppers paid up to £6 more.
Lidl's pre-tax profits surged 31 per cent to £205.5 million as shoppers traded down from big brands to own-label ranges.
