Aldi is pressing ahead with a record £900 million expansion plan for 2027, including 40 new stores, even after operating profits slipped 1% to £432.9 million in 2025 as rising wages and price-cutting campaigns bit into the bottom line. Chief executive Giles Hurley said food costs remain the biggest pressure on households and pledged further price cuts before Christmas. The chain's annual turnover hit a record £19 billion despite the earnings squeeze.
Aldi, which already runs 1,092 shops across the UK and Ireland, will add 30 further locations in the coming ten weeks, among them outlets in Dumbarton, Newport and Willesden.
Beyond new stores, the £900 million investment will fund upgrades to Aldi's warehouse and distribution network as it seeks to reach communities it says are underserved by affordable grocery options.
Hurley told reporters conditions over the summer were 'unprecedented', though he insisted there are no systemic food shortages in UK supply chains.
