Alex Murdaugh wins 'high risk' bid to test mystery male DNA under his murdered wife's fingernails in South Carolina

Judge Debra McCaslin ruled in favour of the defence over prosecutorial objections, greenlighting DNA testing even though the remaining usable samples from Maggie Murdaugh's fingernails and phone are likely to be consumed in the process. The work will be carried out by specialist laboratory Othram, which is looking for a single unidentified male contributor. McCaslin also revealed that Murdaugh actually FAILED a polygraph that his attorney Dick Harpootlian had claimed he passed. The retrial is set to open on April 5, 2027.

McCaslin warned both parties: 'I will not allow these proceedings to become a circus.'

She rejected a defence motion seeking records of other .300 Blackout shootings, dismissing the theory as speculative.

The state Supreme Court overturned his 2023 convictions after court clerk Becky Hill was found to have influenced the jury.
