Every role will start at £15.10 an hour, worth over £31,000 a year pro rata, with a pension and private medical cover from day one. The picking, packing and shipping jobs will go to 18 to 24-year-olds in Britain's most deprived areas. Almost one million 16 to 24-year-olds are now Neets. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has called that an 'economic catastrophe and moral failure'.

Amazon will also expand its work experience offering threefold, hitting a target of 10,000 places by 2030.

Amazon UK boss John Boumphrey: 'No CV required, just a great attitude.'

Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden hailed the move as backing the Government's youth guarantee.
