America's first Muslim senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed taunts Trump and Vance in Michigan victory speech over 'delicious irony' of his swearing-in
"MICHIGAN, WE DID IT!" Abdul El-Sayed celebrates his projected U.S, in a picture posted on X by Fox News.JD Vance, the US Vice President, at a rally in Dallas in September 2026 — weeks before Abdul El-Sayed's victory in Michigan handed Democrats both the House and Senate in the midterms.
Abdul El-Sayed, 42, a former Michigan public health official and son of Egyptian immigrants, crushed Trump-backed Republican Mike Rogers by roughly six points to become the first Muslim ever elected to the US Senate, part of a Democratic 'blue tsunami' that seized both chambers of Congress.
Trump had called El-Sayed a 'jihadist' and 'Muhammad' throughout the campaign; El-Sayed told him to just call him 'Senator' from January.
El-Sayed singled out AIPAC, which spent $42 million against him, telling the group: 'Thank you for giving me the opportunity to beat you twice.'
A body language expert assessed that by the speech's end El-Sayed had turned it into 'a declaration of victory over perceived enemies' rather than a call for unity.
