American ISIS bride sobs as she is convicted of weapons training after blaming the father who took her to Syria
Halima Salman, convicted Tuesday of knowingly receiving military-style weapons training from ISIS, faces up to 10 years in prison at sentencing on 2 February.
Halima Salman, 27, a Brooklyn-born US citizen, was convicted Tuesday in federal court of knowingly receiving military-style weapons training from ISIS after her father moved the family from New York to ISIS-controlled Syria in 2016. The case is believed to be the first time a woman accused of joining ISIS has stood trial in a US federal court. Salman burst into tears, as did her mother and her defence attorneys, when the guilty verdict was read.
Salman trained with an all-female ISIS battalion called Nusaybah Katibah, and was certified to carry an AK-47 and ammunition — the certificate was recovered from her husband's phone.
'You try to leave, it is death,' Salman testified, claiming her father arranged her marriage to ISIS fighter Abu Ali without her consent, days after the two met.
Salman faces up to 10 years in prison at sentencing on 2 February; her lawyers are asking the judge to set aside the verdict.
