Kyle Quin Schrock, 36, a San Diego accountant who left his job to see the world, was hiking in Madeira on October 11 when the ground collapsed under him. He sustained a broken back, ribs and sternum. His family says he is in intensive care, awaiting spinal surgery and drainage of his lungs. A GoFundMe set up by sister-in-law Tara Schrock had raised more than $11,700 toward its $30,000 goal.
While dangling above the drop, he heard someone announce that a helicopter was en route.
He told his 1.3 million Instagram followers: 'I thought it was my death.'
He has vowed to 'get back out there and enjoy life again'.
