Kyle Quin Schrock, 36, of San Diego, was on a hiking trail in Madeira on October 11 when the path gave way under him. 'I thought it was my death,' he told followers in a video from his hospital bed, wearing an oxygen mask. He hung over the drop until a voice from above told him a helicopter was coming. He has a broken back, broken ribs and a broken sternum.

Schrock had left his accounting career to travel the world and take photographs.

His sister-in-law says he remains in intensive care, waiting for spinal surgery.
