Kyle Quin Schrock, 36, of San Diego, was hiking in Madeira on October 11 when the trail collapsed beneath him, sending him falling around 200 feet. 'I thought it was my death,' he told his 1.3 million Instagram followers from his hospital bed, wearing an oxygen mask. A small bush arrested his fall; he clung there above the drop until a helicopter crew found him. He suffered a broken back, broken ribs and a broken sternum.
Schrock had left his accounting career to travel the world as a photographer.
He remains in intensive care, facing spinal surgery and requiring his lungs to be drained.
His family's GoFundMe page states that he faces months without being able to work.
