Andy Burnham hints at a U-turn on Mahmood's migrant settlement crackdown as Labour MPs plot a revolt

Asked to back Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood's plans in full, Prime Minister Andy Burnham would only say 'we will come forward with our decisions soon'. He is understood to be weighing a softer version of her plan to stretch the wait for indefinite leave to remain from five years to up to 15. Dozens of Labour backbenchers have signalled they could vote the legislation down. He still insists settlement is 'a right to be earned'.

Around 2.2 million migrants on temporary visas had a five-year settlement route at the end of 2024.

Housing Secretary Angela Rayner warned that changing the rules for migrants already here would be 'un-British'.

Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh attacked longer settlement waits in a post she later deleted.
