Burnham warns Britain could face more flooding this winter as Storm Austen leaves thousands of Cornwall homes without power
Prime Minister Andy Burnham pushed back against claims the Government is behind the curve as he defended new guidance telling households to keep food and essentials on hand for emergencies lasting several days. He went as far as saying a glass of wine should be permitted to help people cope with a crisis. Storm Austen knocked out power to more than 9,000 Cornwall homes, with Penzance among the worst affected. An amber wind warning is in place from Saturday ahead of Storm Boelo's arrival.
Burnham pointed to a world in which 'unexpected events' are becoming 'more and more common'.
Winds reached 76mph on the Isles of Scilly, and flights were cancelled at Heathrow and Gatwick.
Storm Boelo is forecast to bring gusts of 70-80mph to Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England.
