Burnham warns Britain faces 'a winter of greater flooding' and urges households to stockpile tinned food and water
Storm Austen has knocked out power to thousands of homes and grounded flights, with Cornwall among the worst affected areas. Storm Boelo is following close behind, triggering an amber wind warning running from Saturday into Sunday. Prime Minister Andy Burnham rejected suggestions the Government is behind the curve on civil preparedness, saying 'unexpected events seem to be becoming more and more common'. His remarks came as ministers convened a resilience summit on Friday.
Households are being advised to keep a three-day supply of tinned food and bottled water on hand.
The National Audit Office warned last month that the UK's food supply chain faces significant risk.
Burnham keeps beans, soup and Twiglets in reserve, and says 'a glass or two' of wine is allowed.
