'Anger and shame': Macron vows looters will pay for the damage as France's worst riots see 2,400 arrested
Emmanuel Macron blamed 'insurrectionist elements from radical far-left groups, joined by numerous criminals' and asked: 'How can French people do this to France?' While he spoke, masked gangs were back on Paris's Rue de Rivoli, building barricades and chanting 'everyone hates the police'. Prefects may now ban protests, and Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu is to chair a crisis meeting on Monday.
Macron and his wife Brigitte were at a Celine Dion concert the night before the riots.
Rioters gutted Limoges's 19th-century city hall, and its clock tower and roof collapsed.
Over 500 police, gendarmes and firefighters were hurt, and one protester died of cardiac arrest.
