Anti-social offenders face town centre bans, curfews and up to two years' jail under new ASBO-style Respect Orders

Shabana Mahmood said authorities had "for too long" lacked powers to tackle serial offenders, as courts gain new tools including compulsory rehab and unlimited fines.
Shabana Mahmood said authorities had "for too long" lacked powers to tackle serial offenders, as courts gain new tools including compulsory rehab and unlimited fines.

For the first time, courts can force serial offenders into rehab or anger management classes when drink or drugs fuel their behaviour. The orders, in force across England and Wales from today, apply only to adults. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said that 'for too long' authorities lacked the powers to act. Sir Tony Blair's ASBOs were scrapped in 2014 after legal challenges.

Transport for London, social landlords and even the Environment Agency can enforce them.

Policing Minister Sarah Jones visited Southall, where Met officers plan to use the new orders.

Offenders can also be hit with unlimited fines and compulsory volunteering.
