Javier Milei's government, short of cash, has launched a citizenship-by-investment programme — South America's first — unveiled at a Paris investor event on Friday. Economy Minister Luis Caputo set out two options: a non-refundable $350,000 payment to the national Treasury, or an $800,000 government bond held for seven years. Under the cheaper route, a four-person family would pay $500,000 in total, with applications due to launch by the close of 2026.
Argentina faces close to $25 billion in foreign-currency debt payments coming due in 2027, and advisers believe the scheme could generate as much as $2.5 billion.
The programme is the first by a G20 nation and the first anywhere to write same-sex married couples' equal recognition into its founding guarantee.
