Armed police arrested a man at the Chine Hotel in Bournemouth — one of three properties the Home Office uses to accommodate asylum seekers — after a machete attacker struck a victim over the head in the adjoining public gardens at around 12.40pm. Officers swarmed Boscombe Chine Gardens before tracing the suspect to the hotel, where he was detained on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm and taken away in a police van. The victim was hospitalised with injuries that police do not believe are life-threatening. Dorset Police confirmed an increased presence will remain in the area while enquiries continue.

The Chine Hotel, a Victorian seaside venue that once welcomed Laurel and Hardy and Dame Vera Lynn, has been closed to the public since the Home Office requisitioned it for asylum seekers.

Local residents say crime including assaults, drug-taking and anti-social behaviour has risen since the hotel began housing migrants, with property prices in the area also reported to have dropped.

After armed police cordoned off the area near Boscombe beach, officers led the suspect out of the hotel and placed him in a police van.
