Armed police shot a man at a Bristol property before negotiators had arrived, prompting a watchdog referral

A member of the public called 999 shortly before 5.30pm on Thursday after seeing what they believed was a firearm at an address on Fishponds Road, Eastville. The man, in his 40s, was conscious and breathing when paramedics transported him to hospital. He is stable, with injuries not thought to be life-threatening. Avon and Somerset Police say no arrests have been made and no officers were hurt.

Police admit they still have not traced the injured man's next of kin.

Supt Matt Ebbs insists firearms officers are held to 'the highest standards'.

The address remains cordoned off, and additional patrols will be maintained in the area for several days.
