Arrest of German ex-spymaster August Hanning for treason sparks calls for urgent intelligence reform

August Hanning, once described as the "godfather" of Germany's 21st-century security architecture, is charged with treasonous espionage and handing state secrets to a foreign power in what analysts are calling one of the most spectacular alleged intelligence breaches of the postwar era. Masked commandos led him from his estate in Nordwalde on Tuesday. Bundestag intelligence committee member Konstantin von Notz warned the arrest could escalate into a "genuine national scandal".
Hanning once attacked Germany's own spies as "vegetarians" among carnivores, demanding they be given broader powers.
