Arson suspect, 33, caught fleeing Hitler's Eagle's Nest blaze on a motorbike is sent to a psychiatric facility in Germany
Prosecutors say they will still investigate a possible political motive, given the Kehlsteinhaus's Nazi past. The suspect is a German citizen with ties to the Berchtesgaden area who no longer lives there. Police say the 1938 guesthouse is probably not salvageable. Around 200 firefighters fought the flames at 1,834 metres as the season's first heavy snow and strong wind swept in.
Police stopped him riding down the mountain road as fire crews raced up towards the flames.
Hitler is documented visiting at least 14 times, and Mussolini gifted it a marble fireplace.
