Arson suspect caught fleeing Hitler's Eagle's Nest on a motorbike is sent to a German psychiatric facility
Bavaria's interior minister Joachim Herrmann has vowed the site will not be abandoned: 'We're not going to leave a ruin there.' Police say the Kehlsteinhaus near Berchtesgaden burned down almost completely. The 33-year-old suspect is a German citizen with ties to the area. Prosecutors say he showed signs of mental illness, but they are still examining a possible political motive.
Around 200 firefighters fought the blaze at 1,834 metres, hampered by wind and the season's first snow.
The building hosted the 1944 wedding reception of Gretl Braun, sister of Eva Braun.
Its red marble fireplace was a gift to Hitler from Benito Mussolini.
