Arson suspect sent to psychiatric facility as Bavaria vows Hitler's Eagle's Nest will not be left 'a ruin'

Bavaria's interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, told reporters at the Kehlsteinhaus that the suspect has been remanded to a psychiatric facility, while pledging: "I think we will be able to find a sensible solution" for the gutted building. The suspect is a 33-year-old German with ties to the area who was stopped on a motorbike as he fled the flames. Police say he showed signs of mental illness but are not ruling out a political motive. About 200 firefighters fought the blaze, and police said the building was probably not salvageable.

Hitler formally inaugurated the guesthouse on his birthday in 1939.

It survived RAF bombing in April 1945 and has been a seasonal restaurant since 1952.

Herrmann said: "It is important that we continue to do the work of remembrance."
