At least seven migrants die on boats bound for Spain's Canary Islands as coastguards rescue more than 380 people
Five migrants were thrown overboard during the crossing, their bodies lost at sea, while two more were found dead aboard a rescued boat intercepted 94 miles off Lanzarote. Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo warned that autumn seas are making the deadly Atlantic route lethal again.
Violence reportedly broke out on at least one of the overcrowded boats during the crossing from West Africa.
Clavijo wrote on X: 'The Atlantic route is once again claiming lives — behind each one is a life, a story, and a family.'
Despite Monday's deaths, overall arrivals to the archipelago are down 18 per cent year-on-year to 11,527 — though October saw a sharp surge.
