Left Party leader Luigi Pantisano says Audi chief Gernot Döllner 'must go' for giving 'campaign support for this autocrat'. IG Metall head Christiane Benner called the appearance 'highly embarrassing'. VW works council chief Daniela Cavallo said staff 'must have wanted to sink into the ground in shame'. Döllner insists that when the president invites you, 'you accept the invitation'.

The planned $4bn Perry plant still needs approval from Volkswagen's supervisory board.

Lower Saxony premier Olaf Lies said a campaign event 'cannot be the right place' for this.

Trump's tariffs cost Audi around €1.2bn last year, and German workers now face job cuts.
