Australian MP Helen Haines loses her second leg after an alleged car-ramming attack outside her electorate office
Surgeons had fought to save Helen Haines's remaining leg, but her husband says her 'heart and mind' are 'in good shape'. Brendan Nugent, 43, stared ahead in silence at Wangaratta magistrates court and did not apply for bail. He stays in custody until 4 February. His family say the independent MP for Indi had been a 'close friend of more than 20 years'.
Nugent is charged with intentionally causing serious injury and harming a Commonwealth public official.
The police chief warns of a 'febrile' climate, with one person charged weekly over MP threats.
Rescuer Cody Lepoidevin: Nugent 'was more worried about his personal belongings'.
