The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne described the development as the first sign of progress in Haines's condition since she arrived by air ambulance following Monday's attack outside her Wangaratta office. Brendan Nugent, 43, from Tarrawingee, is charged with intentionally causing serious injury and has entered no plea. Police say an attempted murder charge may follow. His lawyer cited 'mental health concerns'.

Nugent's family have said that he and Haines shared a longstanding friendship.

Husband Phil Haines: 'her heart and her mind' are 'in good shape'.
