Fellow independent Allegra Spender revealed Helen Haines' first words as Australia's parliament resumed under tighter security on Monday. Her husband of 40 years, Phil, watched from the public gallery. Zali Steggall placed an orange cockatoo cut-out on Haines' empty seat, a nod to the volunteers she calls 'a flock of cockatoos'. The MP for Indi remains in Melbourne's The Alfred Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Brendan Nugent, 43, is charged with intentionally causing serious injury but has not entered a plea.

Anthony Albanese warned of 'rage and aggression increasing' and the 'normalisation of the language of grievance and violence'.
