Man is charged with ramming Australian MP who lost a leg, as his father reveals she is a FAMILY FRIEND

Rod Nugent and partner Christine Cunningham say Helen Haines has been their friend for more than 20 years, calling the attack on her 'devastating and unfathomable'. Their son Brendan Nugent, 43, faces three charges, including intentionally causing serious injury. Police allege the attack outside her Wangaratta office was targeted. He is due before Wangaratta Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

Haines, 65, remains critical at The Alfred hospital as surgeons fight to save her other leg.

Barber Ricky Jefferies pulled the suspect from the LandCruiser: 'I don't think I'm a hero.'

Neighbours allege Nugent threatened residents for years and once ran over a family dog.
